This is just a draft copy still need to add web links (any suggestions would be great) not sure of the agreed word count Mary (Mxo)
Hi Mary, this is a great lesson plan but as we don't have to include full lesson plans how can we condense this to address the task? Can you shorten it to an overview, mainly explaining why you chose this way of using IT and how it enhances the students learning, as well as how you will apply each form of it. Does this make sense?Fiona Thanks Fiona, I will work on condensing my lesson plan down and have it on the wiki before Thurs pm Mxo
Hi Mary great start try looking on teachertube may be some info on planets? I like this and think that we are on the right track just need to make sure we word our question correctly but i believe we understand the question. (Tara)
Thanks Tara, have added a bit more, although I was able to add the link I was unable to 'embed' (?) it into 'The magic school bus' instead of http://www etc and the same applies with 'The view from the Hubble' any help with this would be appreciated thanks Mxo

Band: Primary Years Year level: 1-2 Art/ICT

Unit/Topic Description
As the unit topic is space and planets students as part of the art program integrating ICT draw four pictures (in paint program) and order them to show the sequence of the story and link sound effects to each frame and on completion present the slide sequence to a class audience.

Assessment task
Students will create a power-point about their trip to a planet (each pair to decide on a planet destination – for example 'Mars').
The power-point presentation will include pictures created in paint and will also include a narrated slide show.

Teaching and learning activities
  • Tuning In:
Introduce students to the topic question of 'planets of the solar system' and then watch a short video on planets.
After watching the video,The magic school bus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N82vXYVqBMc not sure how to hyperlink this to the wiki ( students in pairs brainstorm about their understanding of the video.

Students then click on The view from Hubble link and look at the photos taken of the galaxies across the universe
http://stage30.scholastic.com/browse/media.jsp?id=989 (Having trouble trying to hyperlink this - view from the Hubble) Mxo

  • Preparing to find out:
In twos students chose a planet destination
In pairs students search to find out what their chosen planet looks like
and discuss, analyse, organise and plan their four pictures/images for their slides

  • Finding Out:
once planet destination is determined and ideas formulated for their slide pictures
students (in pairs) go to the 'paint program' and create 4 pictures
an example might be picture 1- ' a picture of their planet'
picture 2- ' a picture of a rocket'
picture 3- ' a picture of their rocket landing on the planet'
picture 4- ' a picture of the rocket landing back on earth'

  • Sorting Out:
students use the pictures created in the paint program importing them to power-point adding
their pictures 1-4
format background and slide-show and with headphones and microphone, record a narration
an example slide 1- 'This is a picture of my planet ...Mars'
slide 2- ' I'm travelling to Mars in a rocket....10, 9, 8....3,2,1
blastoff'
slide 3- ' This the rocket landing on Mars'
slide 4- ' The rocket and astronauts return to planet Earth'

  • Going further:
using the knowledge that the students have built up and learnt about space and the planets
they will be able to look at the night sky with a view of an astronomer and develop their knowledge and awareness of this vast universe.

Students can brainstorm ideas from the different planets that other students chose as their planet destination and build upon their facts and figures on the stars and planets as 'man' travels into space. Also the development of technology with space travel and rockets and learn about the solar system and the space beyond.

  • Reflection:
Through working collaboratively, making choices and using a combination of multimodal modes – visual and audio, students create their own story-board. By drawing and creating a series of images/drawings in paint and then sequencing the images in order for their slide-show in a power-point presentation, students link some or all of the information they observed or found from the resources on the internet. Making a visual presentation (in order to help them remember and understand the information) and then using audio voice- over to explain and interpret their images on their slides both for assessment purposes and sharing with an audience.

Art/ICT
Students are either at the level one stage or working towards it. As art is apart of every day life students must be able to identify and name major art forms they see and hear. At this stage students are beginning to recognise the arts as being enjoyable and are able to make statements about them. Through play and imagination students are able to adapt and construct their knowledge and understanding and are able to demonstrate or articulate their ideas and feelings through communication or gestures. Students are able to select and sequence images and create works of art that please them and make meaning of what they know and understand. Students are given the opportunity to talk with others in the class about the art works and demonstrate an ability to communicate in their own words what they have observed, heard and seen. Also students should be able to demonstrate what they have learnt or know through making – images, sounds and kinetically through the use of their bodies in drama and dance by making, creating and presenting.
Towards level 1:
  • Students retell a story by placing and creating pictures in a sequence (Exploring and developing ideas)
  • Explore different forms of media ICT using paint and power-point programmes (Using skills, techniques and processes)
  • Listen to and concentrate on various media experiences watching as a whole class – The magic school bus on the whiteboard and on completion of creating pictures for the slideshow presentation, record a narration and then share their presentation with members of the class as an audience (Presenting).
Assessment
The students will be assessed on
  • their ability to sequence their story
  • working together, narration and familiarity of using ICT
  • sequence and order the four slide images and the narration for each slide
  • manipulate basic technology
  • demonstrate emerging knowledge and understanding resulting in a product to share with a classroom audience and provide verbal peer feedback.
